YBB - The ADB Japan Scholarship under the Asian Development Bank–Japan Scholarship Program (ADB–JSP) offers a limited number of fully funded opportunities for the Master of Science in Sustainability at the United Nations University Institute for the Advanced Study of Sustainability (UNU-IAS) in Japan.

This scholarship is designed for professionals from developing countries who are committed to contributing to sustainable development in their home countries after completing their studies.

What Does the ADB Japan Scholarship Cover?

The ADB Japan Scholarship provides comprehensive financial support throughout the study period. Selected scholars will receive:

  • Full tuition fee coverage
  • Monthly subsistence allowance, including housing
  • Thesis research allowance
  • Medical and accident insurance
  • Books and study-related allowance
  • Round-trip economy-class airfare to Tokyo Narita International Airport

For the 2024–2025 academic year, the monthly allowance is JPY 147,000, subject to adjustment.

Who Is Eligible for the ADB Japan Scholarship?

Applicants must first be accepted into the MSc in Sustainability program at UNU-IAS to be considered for the ADB Japan Scholarship.

Eligibility requirements include:

  • Citizenship from an ADB borrowing member country
  • No dual citizenship from developed countries
  • A bachelor’s degree with strong academic performance
  • At least two years of full-time work experience
  • Maximum age of 35 years, unless exceptionally approved
  • Good physical and mental health
  • Willingness to return to the home country for at least two years after graduation
  • Not currently enrolled in another graduate program
  • Not employed by ADB or related institutions

In addition to standard UNU-IAS admission documents, applicants must prepare:

  • ADB-JSP Information Sheet
  • Applicant’s income certificate
  • Family income certificate
  • Employment certificate proving work experience
