YBB - The KAIST Advanced Institute for Science-X (KAI-X) has opened applications for the 2026 Summer KAI-X Research Internship Program. This international summer program offers hands-on research experience for outstanding undergraduate and master’s students in science-related fields.

As global demand for research skills continues to grow, this internship provides early exposure to advanced scientific environments. Therefore, it serves as a strong foundation for students planning postgraduate research careers.

Overview of the KAI-X Research Internship

The KAI-X Research Internship Program focuses on developing future researchers through structured academic training. Participants work closely with KAIST faculty members and contribute to real research projects.

Moreover, the program encourages interdisciplinary thinking and independent research planning. As a result, interns gain both technical skills and academic confidence.

Available Fields of Study

Applicants must select one major and may choose up to two research fields. The program supports research in the following areas:

  • Physics
  • Chemistry
  • Mathematics
  • Biology
  • Brain and Cognitive Science
  • Medical Science

These fields reflect KAI-X’s commitment to advancing fundamental and applied research in the natural sciences.

Who Can Apply

The program welcomes applications from:

  • Overseas undergraduate students in their third or fourth year
  • Graduate students enrolled in a master’s program

However, students currently pursuing a doctoral degree cannot apply. In addition, applicants should demonstrate strong academic performance and a clear interest in research-based study.

Internship Duration and Schedule

The internship will run from July 1 to August 14, 2026, with a total duration of seven weeks.

During this period, interns will follow a structured research schedule. Meanwhile, they will also engage in academic discussions and research activities on campus.

Financial Support and Benefits

The 2026 Summer KAI-X Research Internship Program provides financial assistance to selected participants, including:

  • Round-trip airfare reimbursement (up to 1,000,000 KRW, based on actual expenses)
  • Dormitory accommodation support (up to 500,000 KRW)
  • Living expense support of 600,000 KRW

Therefore, participants can focus fully on research without worrying about major expenses.

Required Application Documents

Applicants must combine all documents into one single PDF file. Incomplete submissions may not be reviewed.

The required documents include:

1. Statement of Purpose (SOP)

Approximately 1,200 characters, covering:

  • Academic background
  • Research or study plans
  • Motivation for applying
  • Research interests and future goals

2. Official Transcript

  • Issued within the last three months
  • Must include an official seal or authorized signature

3. Letter of Recommendation

  • Issued within the last three months
  • Must clearly state the program name:
    “2026 Summer KAI-X Research Internship Program”

Applicants must also provide the recommender’s full name, email address, university affiliation, and position in the application form.

All documents must be written in English. If original documents are not in English, a notarized English translation must be included.

How to Apply

Applicants must submit their application through an online Google Form

  • Application period: January 19 – February 15, 2026 (24:00, Seoul Time)
  • Submission method: Google Form (one-time submission only) 

After submission, applicants may edit their responses before the deadline. However, no changes will be allowed once the deadline passes.

In addition, applicants must log in using a Google account to access the form.

Selection Process and Results

The admissions team will review all complete applications after the deadline. Subsequently, the program will announce final results in mid-April 2026.
